Marketing & Communications Specialist Position

Womansong of Asheville, a local women’s chorus, is hiring a part-time Marketing & Communications Specialist who is fluent with social media, publicity, website management and general storytelling operations.
With 50 active performers, Womansong is Asheville’s largest and longest-running women’s community chorus. Now in our 39th year, we are a non-profit organization with an active board, committee structure, and artistic staff. Our mission: “Singing Together for Joy, Social Justice and Community.” We produce 5 major concert performances per year and sing at community events throughout the year. We are sponsoring our songwriting contest this year and in 2025-26 we recorded and released a 4-song EP. We support women in the Western North Carolina region through our philanthropic program, the New Start Fund. Primary Work Months (Chorus Seasons):
- January to May
- August to November
Hours: Average 8-10 hours/week, with higher hours leading up to concerts
Compensation: $25/hour This is a contract position.

Required Skills, Knowledge, Experience and Abilities
The Marketing & Communications Specialist will work independently, yet in conjunction with others, to support Womansong’s mission and values (https://womansong.org/). The Specialist will be detail-oriented, collaborative, well-organized and possess outstanding writing and speaking skills. The position requires experience with website management (Word Press), e-mail marketing (i.e.MailChimp), and content creation/posting on social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. Graphics creation is a plus.
Major Responsibilities
The Specialist will coordinate Womansong’s external marketing communications, including:
- Drafting an annual Marketing Plan in collaboration with committee chairs, including Marketing, Performance, Development, and New Start Fund; the Artistic Team; and the Wise Woman Council (Board of Directors).
- Coordinating regularly with committee chairs and artistic directors to update the website using WordPress.
- Producing a periodic e-newsletter using Mailchimp.
- Creating content to communicate Womansong’s story and amplify the work of like-minded and similarly-focused organizations via social media (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube), e-mail marketing (Mailchimp).
- Maintaining the archive of marketing & publicity materials (videos, photos, graphics, font styles, video clips) for use in communications
- Managing publicity for Womansong events throughout the year, including new member recruitment, concerts and other performances, and special activities, by identifying target audiences, reaching out to print and online media outlets, setting up radio and magazine interviews, and creating and posting content.
The work is concentrated during the concert seasons, with a lighter schedule during summer and winter breaks. The Marketing Specialist is expected to periodically attend a portion of Monday evening rehearsals and some weekend events. The position will be supervised by the Womansong Wise Woman Council (Board of Directors) Liaison.

Detailed Description of Responsibilities
- Creation and Implementation of a Communications & Marketing Plan
- Outline an annual Marketing and Communications Plan that includes specific goals, activities, and timelines. Plan to include Womansong goals: attracting a younger and a more racially/ethnically diverse membership, telling our story and reaching new audiences through varied marketing strategies.
- Execute and monitor the plan in consultation with Marketing Committee, Committee Chairs, Artistic Team and Wise Woman Council (Board)
- Event Promotion
- Coordinate promotion of Womansong in the greater Asheville region to attract potential new choral members and audience members for concerts and other performances. Publicity includes: press releases and postings to media outlets; overseeing the graphic design of printed posters and postcards; rehearsal and member video shorts; interviews of directors for publications; TV or radio interviews in advance of concerts; social media and e-mail posts
- Communications
- Communicate Womansong’s story via social media (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube), e-mail marketing (Mailchimp) and engage with like-minded organizations
- Weekly social media posts (Facebook and Instagram) with accelerated postings leading up to the concert and other events;
- Edit and add video to Womansong’s YouTube channel;
- Engage as Womansong on other relevant platforms.
- Highlight and link posts of like-minded groups
- Manage Womansong website by working with Committee Chairs and Directors to update web pages as needed; ensure accurate, engaging content, accessibility and design coherence.
- Periodic attendance at Monday night rehearsals to get video footage for FB posts to promote concerts; conduct interviews when needed to be used in social media posts; update choir on communication needs/tech support available
- Manage Womansong’s e-newsletter via Mailchimp by:
- Adding new email addresses to contact list
- Creating or soliciting content from Womansong for newsletter.
- Establish deadlines both for newsletter content submissions and for newsletter delivery.
- Manage archive of publicity and marketing materials (photographs, video and videoclips, font and color styles, templates, etc.)
- Communicate Womansong’s story via social media (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube), e-mail marketing (Mailchimp) and engage with like-minded organizations
- Internal Coordination
- Regularly coordinate with the Marketing Committee and Wise Woman Council Liaison about questions and responsibilities as needed.
- Collaborate with photographer, videographer, and graphic designer to create media materials
- Interface with committee chairs, Artistic Director, Board Liaison as needed for communications and concert-related items.
